I took it across the state to MacMedics (on that other repair shop’s recommendation), and they determined that it wasn’t a power issue at all but a failed hard drive. Even though they were very, very busy, and operating under COVID-19 restrictions, they were still able to recover the term paper in time for her to turn it in on time.
