Yet another senior citizen MacMedics customer got ripped off for $6000!
If fact, this high-value slick scam is so common that while I was checking out one customer who got taken for $6000 that he is NEVER getting back, another customer who ALSO got rooked for $6k in 2022 was also in the store at the same time.
Look, you must tell your parents or grandparents there is no world where they must pay $6000 to get out of trouble. These older folks get embarrassed, and they WON’T want to ask you for help and then fall prey to these smooth-talking scammers from overseas. There is something ingrained in the older generations about doing the right thing and taking care of things themselves that the scammers know, and they sure know how to exploit that honorable trait.
The bad guys use psychological tricks to invoke feelings of guilt, shame, and paranoia to make your grandpa or dad pay up! Put an end to it by talking to the older folks in your life and telling them that no matter what, they can call you to check out any remote access situation before they agree to it.
The scammers use all sorts of tactics to get their money and keep it. Be it a bank ACH draft, gift card, or a bank check held up in front of the camera. And on the topic of gift cards, they way the way they make it believable now is they tell the victims that they need to “pay off” the “hackers” that are inside the victim’s computer. They tell them how common gift card scams are, but this will do the trick and that “they work with the hackers all the time, and they know how to handle them.” This would be something you must say to your loved ones. No matter the reason, don’t ever buy gift cards for anyone related to tech support to “pay off the bad guys.”
Please ensure that 2-Factor Authentication is also set up for your parents/grandparents for email, banking, and banking! Most banks and financial institutions require it now, but not all!
It’s a MUST-do!
