Traveling and you crack your iPhone screen? Here’s what to know before you hand it over for repair.
If you need to use a non-Apple repair shop—whether you’re on vacation, overseas, or just need a quick repair—ask exactly what type of replacement screen they are installing. Not all third-party screens are alike. Some shops can use genuine Apple parts, while others use aftermarket parts that may differ in fit, brightness, color accuracy, touch response, and long-term reliability.
Also, ask for your original screen back. It came from your phone, and it belongs to you. Even if the glass is broken, the OLED or LCD underneath may still work. Some damaged original displays are sold into the refurbishment market, where the glass can be replaced and the display may be resold as a refurbished part. Don’t assume a cracked screen has no value.
Before approving any repair, ask:
- Is the replacement screen genuine Apple, refurbished Apple, or aftermarket?
- What warranty comes with the repair?
- What happens to my original screen?
- Will the repair appear properly in iPhone Parts & Service History?
Most important: Never hand your iPhone to anyone for repair without confirming you have a current backup first. Repairs can sometimes require an erase, and accidents can happen anywhere.

Settings > Your Name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now
Wait for the backup to finish, and make sure the “Last Successful Backup” date and time are current.
No backup = no guarantee your data can be recovered.
